Three Podcast Episodes for a Memorial Day Weekend
Check out friends at and our interviews with the A Little Bit Culty, Better Sex, and Deconstructing Mamas Podcasts.
Happy Friday! I’m so thankful for your investment in our project! Feel free to share this post, our Substack, and our podcast interviews with other people!
Julia and I had three podcast interviews with some of our favorite podcasters release this week. If you’re looking for a new podcast to binge, or for a few episodes to listen to during a Memorial Day weekend road trip, check out these episodes and podcasts!
A Little Bit Culty
An important theme of our podcast and business centers around the fact that Julia and I both grew up in and left Evangelical spaces, and started a podcast and business in which we provide relational and sexual health support for those who grew up in and participated in Evangelical, Mormon, or Pentecostal spaces.
Sarah Edmonton and Nippy Ames have done something quite similar: parlaying their experience in the NXIVM cult into a hit podcast, A Little Bit Culty, which evaluates the psychology of cults, how to leave a cult, and how cult engagement continues to impact you and your relationships even after you’ve left.
Sarah and Nippy were guests on our podcast during the fall in our series “How to Practice Social Justice this Election Season (Without Being a Jackass”.
And we were thrilled that they want to have us on their podcast as well.
“Together, they explore how religion, especially purity culture and fundamentalist gender roles, can cause lasting damage to relationships and sexual well-being. From internalized shame to rigid scripts about gender and sex, Jeremiah and Julia explain how high-control religious environments affect intimacy long after someone leaves the faith.
They also discuss the complexities of deconstructing religion as a couple, the importance of finding shared values, and why therapy can be a vital lifeline through it all. If you’re trying to untangle your beliefs from your bedroom, this conversation offers both validation and guidance.”
And they give us an amazing compliment at the end of their review:
“This one’s extra spicy, so listener discretion is advised.”
Extra spicy. Definitely not adjectives that Julia or I would have used to describe ourselves ten years ago. :)
If you are interested in learning more about cults, but with the kindness, compassion, and curiosity of folks who have been there, Sarah and Nippy are an amazing resource!
Better Sex Podcast
Jessa Zimmerman is a renowned certified sex therapist in the Seattle area. If you are looking for a high quality discussion about a diversity of sexual health topics, hosted by a brilliant, experienced, and extremely calming expert sex therapist, the Better Sex Podcast is the place for you.
We talked with Jess about the impact of deconstruction from high-control religions on long-term relationships. We specifically explore some of the most common starting points for deconstruction, and how the process of relationship and sex therapy might impact the deconstruction process.
Deconstructing Mamas Podcast
and are the hosts of the Deconstructing Mamas podcast. There are a lot of former Evangelical podcasts out there (including ours); Lizz and Esther’s is one of the best at gathering the voices and experiences of former Evangelicals to explore how a future Christianity can be more family-positive, child-positive, and body-positive. They write in their show notes:
“Our conversation is full of candor, surprises and mic-drop moments over and over again. We were blown away by one thing that will leave you wanting more.”
Thanks so much for the ringing endorsement! We were really thrilled to discuss the ways that we can foster curiosity in our children and young adults, rather than fear and shame. We also talked about parenting adolescents forces a parent to reengage with their own sexual development, and provided some tips for couples who might be exploring their sexuality at the same time their children are.
We hope these episodes are helpful and fun!
Julia and I offer free 30 minute consultations with couples who are interested in pursuing relationship and sex therapy/coaching. (And 60 minute consultations for paying members of Relationship 101!) We specialize in working with who participated in an Evangelical, Mormon, or Pentecostal community, and are looking to discover or rediscover the role that sexuality might play in your life and relationship.
Let’s heal together!
Jeremiah and Julia
Well done you two!
